Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology delivers both data and electrical power to a device through the network cable itself, reducing the need for a separate power source near each device. It is widely used with surveillance cameras, Wi-Fi points, IP phones, access control devices and many other technical systems.

The main difference between PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ is the amount of power that can be supplied to connected devices. Some devices need very little power, while advanced cameras, high-performance Access Points or some display and control devices need more, which is why PoE standards with different power levels emerged to meet the needs of these devices.

But choosing a switch does not depend on the power of each port alone; you must also pay attention to the total PoE Budget the switch can supply to all ports at the same time. A switch may have a large number of PoE ports, yet its total capacity may not be enough to run all devices at their maximum consumption.

That is why the switch is chosen after knowing the number of devices, the power of each device, total power consumption, network speeds and the required Uplinks. The right design ensures sufficient power with a spare margin for expansion, instead of choosing a switch based on the number of ports alone and then discovering its power limits after installation.
